Samsung with its latest technologies in m.2 SSD drives have blown away the competition in the market. Even it is available for more than a year in the market right now, no other SSD manufacturer can offer an SSD drive that can come close to Samsung 960 EVO in terms of its data speed at this price range.

However, Samsung also does offers Samsung 960 pros, which has a significant data-transfer speed as compared with Samsung 960 Evo models. Samsung 960 Pro models start with 512GB storage space with price starting at $288 (for 512GB).

Samsung 960 Evo is a cheaper version of Samsung 960 pros with almost similar features and extreme performance in compare to Samsung 960 pros. 960 Evo series can beat almost every SATA SSD drive on the market as well as some good numbers of PCIe express SSD drives in terms of data-transfer speed.

Samsung’s 960 Evo model series takes advantages of NVMe protocol, and it utilizes the PCIe interface. All models are built on m.2 (22 x 80) form factors. Samsung’s latest generation SLC caching technology and branded intelligent turbo has been also used in 960 Evo series. Samsung has also improved its thermal control data to protect the drive from heating and has lager buffer size to load more data at full speed at the same time.

Technical Specification:

  • Controller: Samsung Polaris
  • Flash Memory: Samsung V-NAND 3-bit TLC
  • Cache Memory: 512 LPDDR3
  • Sequential Read speed: 3200 MB/s
  • Sequential Write speed: 1900 MB/s
  • IOPS Read: 330,000
  • IOPS Write: 330,000
  • Power Consumption: 5.4 watts
  • Terabytes written: 200 TBW
  • Warranty period: three Years

Samsung 960 Pros use MLC (Multi-level cell) stores 2 bits cell. However, 960 Evo series use TLC (three-level level cell) & stores 3 bits cell. TCL in Samsung 960 Evo series improve density and capacity of the drive but also reduces the performance that’s why 960 Evo series have sequential read and write speed of 3200 MB/s and 1900 MB/s in compared to Samsung’s 960 pro series read and write speed of 3500 MB/s and 2100 MB/s.

Sequential read/write speed

Samsung’s 960 pro models are capable of writing 400TB of data in its lifetime whereas 960 Evo series are capable of writing 200TB of data in its lifetime, which is still an insane amount of data. Furthermore, Samsung is offering three years of warranty with its 960 Evo series drives and five years of warranty with its 960-pro series of SSD drives.

In our opinion, it would be unrealistic to use that much data by a typical user during the warranty period of 960 Evo drive. Unless you are using the enterprise data warehouse, you are good to go with low storage SSD drives. 960 Evo series come in three capacities.

Samsung 960 Evo 256GB model staring at $119, 512GB model at $219.92 and the 1TB model costs for $437.97. Samsung claims that on typical load, the 1TB model will consume 5.7 watts, 5.1 watts for the 512GB model and 5.3 watts for 256GB model, and these are the similar ratings as to 960 pro series.

Data Transfer Speed Test

All the 3 versions of 960 Evo series are just 80mm long just like 960 pro series with m.2 (22 x 80) form factor. The drive weighs between 8.3 and 9 grams among those 1TB models are the heaviest. All those three models in Samsung 960 Evo series have been same read speed, although their write speed varies, for example, 240GB of 960 Evo series has a write speed of 1.5 GB/s and the 512GB model have the write speed of 1.8 GB/s and the larger 1TB model have the write speed of 1.9 GB/s.

Samsung’s 960 Evo series provides the same data encryption services as the other Samsung’s SATA SSD drives. See the benchmark graph below to compare Samsung 960 Evo series Read/Write performance in compared with other SSD drives.

With Samsung 960 Evo series, your computer will now boot up in less than 7 seconds and will improve the app and game load time to the greater extent. Use Samsung 960 Evo series to make your computer faster, snappier and fluent in terms of user’s experience. Samsung 960 Evo series provide more than three times data transfer and read to write speed in compare to other SATA SSD drives.

Samsung 960 Evo series SSD drives provides the best value for your investments as it boosts overall performance of your Pcs as well as boosting load time for heavy apps such as Adobe Photoshop, Video-editing programs, Office apps and Video games.

If you are a gamer or a general user, who loves to play games or surf the Internet, then the Samsung’s 960 Evo series SSD drives are the perfect choices for you. However, before purchasing it, please make sure that your system supports PCIe interface for m.2 SSD drive installation.
