According to my experience & personal opinion, disk imagining programs are extremely valuable in today’s digital world as its provide your system with the ability to go back to an earlier point in time. It also helps you to save time, in case your system crashes and unable to boot for any reason. Installing a fresh operating system from scratch could consume more time, but with a disk imagining program, you can restore your system to a previous state in minutes.

A system may crash due to several reasons such as an online virus attack, or an incompatible Windows update or due to other reasons. Macrium is well known for developing Windows-based disk imagining and cloning solution that has a simple user-friendly interface and cost less than any other disk imagining tools.

Macrium offers Reflect 7 both free & paid edition and both editions have an impressive features list. I have been using this program for more than a year, and I am very much impressed by the list of features this program offers, especially the ability to boot into the operating system from an image file just like other programs that give you the ability to use a virtual operating system on your existing Window OS.

Installing Macrium Reflect 7 Free & Home Edition

Unlike other programs, a single installer offers you to install a free or paid edition both editions. When you install the program, it will let you choose the version that you want you to install. However, it will also download the WindowsPE file which is useful for creating a bootable recovery environment for restore purposes. In case, if you already have WinPE files stored on your device, you can browse to select those files to avoid downloading again by the program.

Among several features, my favourite features are ViBoot & Image guardian. ViBoot feature let you use your image files to boot as virtual machines and on the other hand, image guardians protect your backup files from Ransomware. ViBoot uses Hyper V technology built into Windows OS to make sure everything’s works as expected. Paid edition also offers changed backlog tracking feature to make sure that the backup runs faster as compared to the free edition.

The program is configurable in so many ways and according to the user’s comfort. You can configure default actions for your operations. Like other backup programs, Macrium Reflect 7 let you set the compression level for your backup files, you can split your backup archives. protect your backups with a password, setting CPU priority and verify your image backups before starting the restore process.

The program’s cloning feature also considers SSD architecture to make faster clones using an Intelligent sector copy. Like every other backup & restore programs, Macrium Reflect 7 also offers the similar options to configure restore settings. You can also schedule your backups, and configure email notifications.

Supported File Systems:

Macrium Reflect 7 detects both NTFS & Linux file systems but it works with NTFS & NTFS File systems only.

Creating Your First Backup With Macrium Reflect 7

You can save your backup image files on the other partition of your system’s disk, but it is always advisable to use an external storage drive to store your system backup files. So the first step while creating your first image backup is to choose the destination drive where you want to save your backup files and click next to choose the backup schedule. The program has several backup plans, including Incremental, Differential, and full backup with varying retentional rules.

Once you have done choosing the backup plan and retentional rule, the program will test your disk speed and will start the backup operation. The backup process may take a few minutes, depending upon the read/write speed of the destination disk.

Configuring XML Files

Macrium Reflect 7 generates an XML file once your first backup is created, which can be configured from the second tab in the backup image section. You can also change settings, batch script, MS-DOS script or script the backup as a PowerShell script. You can also change your existing backup plan from differential to full or from full to incremental or differential.

Creating a Bootable Media With Macrium Reflect 7

It is advisable to create a bootable media on a CD/DVD or a USB drive to restore your system from the boot menu in case of a system failure when the device fails to boot. After creating a bootable media, restore from an image backup to make sure that it works correctly to avoid an uncomfortable situation in case of a system failure.

You can create bootable media by choosing the PE type you want, such as UEFI, Secure Boot and USB 3.0. Creating a boot media with Macrium Reflect 7 do not require technical experience as the program automatically choose the optimal setting for your operating system. During this process, the program also checks all devices to make sure that they are compatible. It downloads the supported drivers for the device attached to your system. However, you can also manually update the device drivers by clicking on Update Driver button.

You can choose architecture as well as support for iSCSI and BitLocker or you can also use your own image file to create bootable media for recovery. The program will also ask your permission to update the existing WinPE files in case a new update is available to ensure the support and compatibility of your system’s hardware.

You can create a bootable media on a USB pen drive or create an ISO file. To create a USB bootable media, the drive must be formatted with NTFS or FAT32 File Systems.

Restoring Windows With Macrium Reflect 7

You can restore your Windows from the boot menu using bootable media or you can choose to restore your Windows by logging into your Windows operating system and selecting restore option from program’s interface. However, in the case of a system failure where OS fails to boot, you have the first only option to restore your windows.

Macrium reflects 7 helps you to fix boot problems and can check any unsupported device or deploy a new hardware. The seamless integration of several useful features into a single program is quite impressive.

Macrium Reflect 7: Licensing and Pricing

The developer offers free & paid both editions with the almost similar feature. You can download the free edition from here. However, the paid version has more compelling features. You can buy a single license for $69.95 or a license pack for 4 devices at $139.95. If you want to test the paid edition before purchasing it, you can download a 30 days trial from here.

Conclusion: Macrium Reflect 7 is a powerful Windows Imagining software and has lots of features with a simple easy to use yet complicated user interface. It allows users to create or restore the Windows OS with just a few clicks without the need for any technical knowledge. Unlike other Imaging programs, Macrium Reflect 7 offers a wide list of features and options that can be configured manually. The viBoot feature in Macrium Reflect 7 makes it unique and the only Windows Imagining program, that allows you to choose your image file to use it as a virtual machine.

The program has so many features to offer but its complicated user interface may create problems for the users having no technical knowledge. We will definitely recommend this program to our readers. If you can invest some money Macrium Reflect 7 Home edition is the perfect option that can protect your system from any unusual system crash, blue screen issues or online threat attacks.

Apart from usual features I like Rapid Delta Restore (RDR), which helps to quickly restore back to original disk/snapshot created just prior to changes made. This RDR feature is very useful for testing out new software without having to say depend on sanboxie or a virtual machine to test anything new

    Thanks,
    Grr

  3. Great thanks for this chance. I like this program. I am following this page & Macrium page on facebook.
